Tool for Today’s Economy: An independent consumer financial protection agency

(NNPA)-For most Americans, the Better Business Bureau is the private sector’s gold standard of objectivity and fairness. Founded in 1912, this nonprofit organization today has 123 offices in the United States and Canada that monitor more than four million local and national businesses and charities.

So when this advocate for fairness and transparency issues a written warning against deceitful activity, it is time to take note. After receiving a deluge of complaints, the BBB recently told buyers to beware. The warning also came following an independent investigation and lawsuit by the West Virginia attorney general.

The culprit: online payday loans.

According to Stephen A. Cox, president and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, “Desperate times are leading people to the Internet to apply for payday loans and many are falling deeper into debt after getting tangled up with a lender who has zero regard for the law.”

As with traditional payday store loans, online payday lenders quickly give consumers a painful lesson

The Week Unzipped : Insurance claimants’ tall tales cost honest policyholders GBP16 million

The Week Unzipped : Insurance claimants’ tall tales cost honest policyholders GBP16 million

0 Comments | Scotland on Sunday (Edinburgh, Scotland), July 25, 2010

Byline: NO BYLINE

DISHONEST insurance claims are soaring at a record 2,000 a week, costing honest policyholders more than GBP16 million, according to the Association of British Insurers.

Among the frauds detected was the case of a man who claimed he had fractured his hand after falling over a pothole in the street, when he had sustained the injury after punching a wall during a domestic dispute. In another, a young woman claimed to have tripped over a loose pavement slab, when in fact her injuries were sustained from jumping down a flight of stairs while running away from security guards on suspicion of shoplifting.

And finally, someone claimed for head injuries allegedly from falling over, when they were in fact sustained after being hit on the head by a baseball bat during a fight.

Motor insurance frauds were highest by value, with dishonest claims totalling GBP410 million uncovered. The most common frauds involved home insurance, with 62,000 bogus or exaggerated claims detected.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is sending an urgent reminder to tax credit claimants – renew your claim by the 31 July deadline, or your payments will stop.

Renewing is simple – you need to check the accuracy of the information in the renewals pack you’ve been sent, and let HMRC know of any changes in your circumstances you haven’t already reported during the year, such as your working hours, childcare costs or pay. You must also provide details of your previous year’s income. Having the right documents to hand will help reduce errors when you’re filling out the form, for example, payslips, your end-of-year P60 form and childcare details.

HMRC’s Director of Benefits and Credits, Steve Lamey, said: “There are only a few days left to renew your tax credits, so you need to take urgent action if your haven’t done so.”

Bankruptcy toll soars

The number of Scottish companies going bankrupt has risen dramatically over the past year, according to data from the Accountant in Bankruptcy.

The figures for April to June show a rise of 66 per cent compared with the same period in 2009

Leaning back on the heels after

Leaning back on the heels after foot plant can be caused by excessive rolling-in motion of the feet or weak calf muscles.

Treatment often includes special inserts in the shoes and calf strengthening exercises, such as toe raises while holding a heavy weight in the hands. Holding the shoulders up towards the ears during running is usually caused by weak shoulder muscles, which can be corrected by shrugging the shoulders while holding weights. A low knee-lift is often caused by weak quadriceps muscles in the front of the upper leg. The quadriceps can be strengthened by pedaling a bicycle, skating, or running up hills.

When they agreed, my writing

When they agreed, my writing career was launched while I learned the discipline of column writing and fine-tuned my new craft. Today that column, “In the Scheme of Things,” is self-syndicated in several states and Canada, and a second column, “Winning at Working,” (the one you’re reading) was launched a year later. It now reaches hundreds of thousands of web-based readers and is the foundation for my first book.

So what’s the difference in today’s writing success? Luck? Yes, but it’s self-created luck. Better writing? Sure, I’m a better writer today than I was in my twenties. But, that’s not it. It’s discipline and determination. There are days when I’m not in the mood to write, but writers write, and I write. There are days when marketing my column to another publication or getting one more rejection seems overwhelming.

Allstate decision has agents, homeowners in a whirlwind Company not

Allstate decision has agents, homeowners in a whirlwind Company not

0 Comments | Florida Times Union, Jan 20, 2005 | by URVAKSH KARKARIA

Allstate customers aren’t the only ones feeling the fall-out from the insurance carrier’s decision not to renew 95,000 residential homeowner policies statewide. So is the competition.

Allstate, which will also stop writing commercial insurance policies in Florida, made the decision because of the four hurricanes that hit Florida last year, the Associated Press reported. The company shelled out about $2 billion in claims after Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne battered Florida.

Linda Greene, an insurance agent with Gray and Gray Insurance, has seen a 5 percent to 10 percent hike in the number of callers seeking homeowner insurance quotes. About half were Allstate customers looking to switch carriers.

Within the last week, Greene said she has written three or four policies for Allstate customers whose policies were not being renewed.

Those people “were mad because they are getting cancelled,” she said. “You’ve been with the company five, 10, 15 years and all of a sudden bam, you’re cancelled.”

Allstate Floridian, an independent branch of Allstate Corp., will keep about 663,000 homeowner policies in the state, and Universal Insurance Co. of North America has agreed to sell policies to any Allstate customers who are not renewed, according to an Allstate news release. An Allstate spokesman could not say how many of the cancelled policies were in Northeast Florida

Market Wire, July, 2010

Open Identity Exchange (OIX) and Kantara Initiative announced today that they will begin collaborating on digital trust framework development to build and promote adoption of a robust online trust ecosystem. 1. Develop a joint approach to federation services and trust framework
certification that takes advantage of the complementary features of the
Kantara Initiative Identity Assurance Framework (IAF) and the OIX Trust
    Framework Platform.
2. Develop technology and policy best practice guidelines in response to
growing needs for trust frameworks spanning all types of networks,
transactions, and jurisdictions around the globe.
3. Identify additional trust framework infrastructure, operations, and
